Introduction to Private Drainage Schemes~~2
Private sewage treatment schemes are necessary when mains drainage is not available. This could be for several reasons, ranging from an overloaded municipal sewage works to a rural site with no access to the main sewer. In this situation there are various options available, and these are briefly outlined below.
Reed Bed Treatment Scheme~11~3
The most environmentally friendly and sustainable form of sewage treatment. The effluent is treated to allow discharge to a stream or seasonal ditch. This form of treatment does not require an electrical supply. For information on Reed beds please click here.
Package Sewage Treatment Plant
This type of drainage scheme is used when the land is not suitable for a self-contained soakaway and the effluent has to be treated prior to discharge to a stream or seasonal ditch. If you require additional information about sewage treatment plants please click here.
Septic Tank Drainage
Historically the most common form of private drainage scheme, and still a good drainage option if you have the available land and the site is located in an area which is free from clay, springs or issues and does not have a seasonal high water table. In this type of drainage the effluent is not treated to a high standard and must be discharged to ground.
Cesspool
You`re last option, and only to be considered if all else has failed! A cesspool is a sealed tank which takes all the water and waste from your house. The waste is then removed by tanker and disposed off at a municipal works. If you need to install a cesspool, ensure that water saving devices are fitted to all taps and toilets and that an ordinary shower is fitted not a power shower.
